Announcements
Pres. Andy: Referred to his earlier email regarding trail maintenance projects coming up in Durham. We'll talk about that next week at our Club Forum. We'd like also to hear about projects which may be appropriate for us in Madbury and Lee ... Bingo was a blast last week. John and Ric are handling the commitment this week. Advice: Wear comfortable shoes, park in the back lot, and be ready to start the brief training at 3:45 PM.
Tom B: Had a great District Assembly last Saturday, Bingo is launched, and there is still time for club members to suggest a community need we could meet through a District Grant by the June 1st deadline.
Will: The UNH MOU for fireworks is expected to be ready for signature today. Although the Victory Lounge is still available, UNH's Dining Services will not be participating (we can arrange for commercial food vendors) and there will be no alcohol. The baseball field location is restricted to 3"-4" shells; Boulder Field can provide the 600+ ft of separation required for 6" shells, however, use of that area may cause an issue with parking in the vicinity.
Anon: There will be a Fundraising Committee meeting this Friday morning at The Works bagelry. The letter to sponsors will need to be amended to accommodate the changes noted above.
David: There are many more volunteer opportunities this year at Marina's Miles from preparing snack food for runners, officiating the start and finish of the race, manning the table in the gym, and addressing the crowd at the awards afterward, not to mention the water table setup and manning during the race. Check with Dave if you still need a job.
Program
Kristin Welch, Director of Advancement for the Community Action Partnership of Strafford County (CAPSC), spoke to us about the work of this non-profit located in Dover and serving the entire county. Their mission is to improve the lives of the most vulnerable.
Last year, they assisted 10,560 households with a budget of $8.3 million (545 of those households and $113 thousand of those expenses were in our jurisdiction). Most of their revenue is Federal, and their services are provided by 131 paid staff.
Those services fall into four areas:
- Child and Family Services such as Head Start, senior meals, and home visiting.
- Community Outreach Services such as fuel assistance, senior transportation, and food pantries.
- Housing Stabilization Services such as finding room at shelters.
- Training and Employment such as skill development.
Gregg Dowty from the Dover Rotary spoke to us about a playground being planned at CAPSC's new site. They're contributing $15K, Rochester Rotary is contributing $2K and they are inviting our partnership. They plan to apply for a $5K grant from District as well.
