Announcements

Rob Drugan: Marina's Miles was a great success with some 300 runners.  Rob wanted to thank us on behalf of his Board for our financial and sweat equity.  They will be able to award a $4,000 scholarship at Oyster River in Marina's memory.  He would like to see the award continue.  With that in mind, they are building up an endowment (something north of $65,000) with an initial investment of $10,000 this year in a Rotary International donor-advised fund with David's help.

Pres-elect Tom B: Announced that he had some committee assignments open.  Ric will get the names to District before the deadline for the District Directory to go to the printer.  So, if you're looking for a creative role for next year, see Tom now.

Pres. Andy: Bingo - Brian B and David for May 10th; Candace and Stephen for May 17th ... Fireworks Committee meeting at the Works on Friday at 4 PM as usual ... Tree planting in Thompson Forest from 12 - 3 PM ... Reminder that we will be meeting next week at the truck stop on Rte 4 for highway cleanup.  Wear clothes appropriate for the occasion.  Bill will provide the vests, and Frank R the coffee.

Russ: The new signs are up at each of our Rotary sign sites with instructions on how to donate to the Fireworks ... The town has approved a donation thermometer to be installed on the triangle across from Young's.

Program

Heidi Chase, Executive Director of Friends in Action spoke to us about the work of her group.  Founded in 2000, it's focus is on young people from 18 to 30 with developmental disabilities.  (Developmental disabilities are a diverse group of chronic conditions due to mental or physical impairments which cause many difficulties with language, mobility, learning, self-help and independent living.)

The mission is to create an after-school environment which mirrors as much as possible the activities of people their age not so affected by creating social and recreational opportunities.  So, you might find them having pizza with UNH student volunteers, enjoying a movie or bowling, or having dinner and a DJ dance with their friends - whatever it takes to combat the social isolation of their condition.

Friends in Action currently serves 200 families from 50 towns.

The program depends on individual and corporate donations as well as adult and student volunteers at the activities.  Friends in Action also welcomes donations of clothing, especially women's, which is sold at the Echo Thrift Shop of Durham Community Church.  For more information, visit their website: FriendsinActionnh.org .

Is it the truth?  Is it fair to all concerned?  Will it build good will and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
