Pres. Tom: Received a thank you note and check for $50 from Dan and Kathy Bean for the fireworks ... Frank and Heather are up for Bingo tomorrow, Aug 2nd; Pres. Tom and Brian B have it on Aug 9th ... Inducted Phillip Albright into the club as a transfer from the Portsmouth club. Welcome.
John: We ended the year with $4,000 in the Charitable Account. We manage on a cash basis, so income still expected in for the fireworks will be credited to '18 - '19.
Stephanie: Presented the club with a banner from her old club, Greater Corvallis, OR.
Program
Mary-Jo Monusky, Executive Director of Arts in Reach (AIR), spoke to us about their work to reach teenage girls over the last 20 years. Using creative writing, singing, visual arts, and theatre after-school and vacation programs on a rotating basis throughout the year, they seek to build girls' confidence and help them find their authentic selves.
Girls in Strafford and Rockingham county towns can apply and approximately 100 are served each year. 47% are from single-parent households, and many are referred by guidance counselors. The staff are supportive, mentors and role models. In a survey of alumnae, over 90% cited AIR as life changing. A short video of testimonials by parents and their teen agers drove the point home.
AIR's budget is about $216K/year, raised from grants and productions. There is no cost to participants.
